Finding Courage and Strength in the Fight: A Journey with Cancer Warriors
More than anything else, courage can creep up on us in the most serendipitous of ways. Sitting in darkness with just the dim light of a desk lamp on us, we think. Do you ever find that this is when courage arrives, not as a roar but merely persistent whisper? It urges us to put one foot in front of the other, regardless of how impossible the road ahead may seem.
Cancer warriors rise and fight each day. That is not a decision taken under compulsion, but evidence of the tremendous human spirit. And this fight is threaded through our mornings, lies in the act of making tea or breathing as we wake to another day more full-breathed with promise.
Imagine this: A warrior stands before a mirror. Those scars tell stories of strength, and those smiles are victories against fear. How often do we stop and give thanks for those little victories? Even when we can laugh louder than cry or be more patient with others. They are the silent acts of courage that do not make news but build lives.
Sit with the home team that emerges around each warrior. A hug, a set of ears that were available to me through my family and friends. Isn’t that something—how these connections help reinvigorate our spirit? They remind us that we are never alone, not even when alone.
Find surprises in the unexpected joy. The laughter of a child, the smell of rain on new asphalt, or that hug. These treasures overflow them, showing us what life is like on the other side of this. They are the reminders that, amongst all trials, life still gives you thousands of reasons to smile.
If in this journey is courage, then it should be defined as putting broken pieces back together daily and never giving up. Standing tall even when the shadows loom large. How does courage look to you in this era? Or could it be as basic as giving yourself the right to relax and recover? But it could be as simple and difficult as the courage to ask for help or tell your story.
And as we continue on this journey, let us all hold each other’s stories of courage closely. Tell your stories, lift each other up, and dare to hope for better days. Creating our own story of resilience through each brave moment.
As always, you are the hero of this story. We light a path in the unknown for others. Keep fighting. Keep believing. Your journey inspires us all.
Stay strong, dear warriors. You are not alone.
